After passing the bar exam, before officially being authorized to practice law, each attorney must swear an “Oath of Attorney.” The final paragraph of that oath reads: “I will never reject, from any consideration personal to myself, the cause of the defenseless or oppressed, or delay anyone’s cause for lucre or malice.” The oath is rooted in the ideal that helping those less fortunate is an obligation, not an afterthought.
